How waffles evolved from an Ancient Roman delicacy to one of the world’s most popular treats
Synopsis: Waffles, one of the world’s oldest treats, have evolved from their origins in ancient Rome to become a popular delicacy worldwide. Experts trace modern waffles back to Roman *crustula*, a simple, crispy biscuit made with flour, honey, and lard, which Romans enjoyed during religious rituals and as a dessert. Over time, *crustula* transformed into ferratelle, an Italian cookie with grooved patterns that closely resembles modern waffles. Ferratelle spread across Europe and, with Dutch settlers, eventually reached America in the 1600s, where they continued to evolve into the waffles we know today.
